Cripple Creek, Colorado, WHITMAN GUILDTM "Cripple Creek, Colorado"

[377]from "JMK"-27 November 2001:
I am looking for some specific information on a particular puzzle that Whitman/Guild produced in about the 1970's. This puzzle is identified as Series 172 and includes scenic photos from various places including Germany, Spain and the U.S. Do you have any idea how I might contact Whitman regarding a puzzle from this series? Any info you can provide would sure be appreciated.
Thank you,
"JMK"

See no. 371 above. However, you may be able to find some of these puzzles on the secondary market.

Mr. McWhorter,
Thank you for your prompt response about the Whitman puzzles. Actually I already have the puzzle. What I am trying to track is the photo subject for the puzzle itself. The picture is identified (in Series 172) as Cripple Creek, Colorado, but I can't seem to verify the building in the photo. I live in Cripple Creek and have never seen this building before. If you could add this part of my inquiry to my question, it may help.
Thank you again,

I understand now. Anne Williams, in her essential book, Jigsaw Puzzles, an Illustrated History and Price Guide, says that the Whitman name [on puzzles] was phased out in 1979 or shortly thereafter. That suggests that your puzzle is probably 20 to 35 years old. If the terrain is identifiable as in the Cripple Creek area, then the building may have existed back then, and you may be able to look through area historical and photographic records for it. If the terrain is not identifiable, then the manufacturer or photographer may have taken "artistic license" with the title, substituting a picturesque name for that of the real location. If you can get us a picture of the puzzle or box, we will post that and see if anyone can identify it.
Thanks, Jim McW

Mr. McWhorter,
Thanks again for your quick response regarding my Whitman puzzle depicting an alleged photo of Cripple Creek.
As an employee of the local museum and an area historian, I have poured over photographs hoping to find a photo showing the referenced building. So far I have arrived at nothing. In actuality, the building strongly resembles one in the ghost town of Ashcroft near Aspen, except the bottom floor windows do not appear to match. The landscape is also similar, but also does not quite match.
I am attaching a photo of the puzzle box. Thank you for your offer to post it on the internet.
Happy 2002,
"JMK"
