All the above contained a key and the little lozenge-shaped pieces to put into the correct location in the puzzle once finished. In 1970 WADDINGTON'STM produced another set of Jig Map puzzles, this time in a slightly flimsier box and with Stock numbers not Design numbers. The box also mentioned the word "Vari-piece" to describe the puzzle cut. This time they included the British Isles, Australia (no Tasmania), Australia with Tasmania, Africa, India, Ireland, North America, South America, North Europe, South Europe and added New Zealand and Scandanavia. They no longer included the key sheet and extra city names to substitute - just one set of lozenge-shapes. They produced an up-dated version of five or six of these puzzles in 1979 - this time with a reference number, but the board was thinner, and they were not such nice puzzles to complete.

from "L.W."--8/15/2003: What an interesting site you have! I am particularly fond of map puzzles in general, and have been collecting Waddingtons Jigmaps for a while (just from jumble sales etc.).

I enclose a scan of a different style of box, dated 1983 [left], which contains the revised/modernised illustration type that matches the 1979 ones that your earlier correspondent mentions.

As you can see on the box, the main difference apart from drawing style is that you can see the answers to the ’place-name quiz’ as you go along. And of course the red box is more striking.

Best wishes from England, "LW"

This page came about partly due to a question sent in by Kevin:

[24]from Kevin--7/27/2000:
I would like to ask anyone if they know of a series of puzzles by Waddington called "Shaped Jig-Map with Place Name Quiz" - the one I have is made in Canada by Parker Brother Games.
The box does not state the # of pieces but about 300 and forms a puzzle 23 x 18 1/4.
The puzzle is in the shape of the country with images of the country on the map and the quiz is a series of city names that you can insert into the puzzle.
I have Design #426 India so I assume there are other countries done up in this fashion. I would like to collect this series.
Thank you in advance.

Dear Kevin:
See the "Map Jigsaw Puzzles" page for two of this series. I don't know much about the series. Does anyone out there have any more information about it or pictures of other puzzles? Thanks, Jim McW

from Barbara Middlestorb--7/24/2000:
Jim and Kevin:
Thought you'd like to know that Waddington's produced this series, in England, in about 1960 , originally with 10 titles: The British Isles; Africa; North American Continent; South American Continent; Australia; India; Northern Europe; Southern Europe and Ireland. These all had Design numbers eg Des.No.421, Des.No.422 etc. These contained a little envelope containing the little lozenge-shaped pieces with city names on to substitute once you'd made up the picture,
In 1970 they reproduced them with slight modification this time with 11 titles.
You may have found all this out already but I've only just discovered your web site so thought I'd contact you.
Barbara
[Note: Barbara has provided us with more info, which you can see above.]

Okay, I was too quick on my earlier email. I just looked over the site in more detail and saw the puzzles for South America and Australia (although why the entire continent of South America only gets one puzzle confuses me). These are obviously 2 others in the series I was looking for so would still like to know what others are out there.
Still thanks for posting this query.

I'm a little delayed but here is the image of the India map puzzle that I promised.

Hope these are useful.

Great website! (found by Yahoo search)
I have a few (~ 12) Jigmaps, some complete, most are not... is there any market for them? (in the UK)

from Jim McW--3 August 2002:
Thanks! Well, they are rather popular, given that they are several years out of print. Still, very few people know of them outside the Commonwealth. They seem usually to sell for 5-10 pounds, I believe.
Thanks, Jim McW

from "Alix-the-Charity-Shopper"-7 August 2002:
Hi Jim -
Jig-Maps I have include the following numbers:
423 North American Continent
427 Northern Europe
428 Southern Europe
512 New Zealand
558 Scandinavia
558 Ireland (yes, they are both 558! according to the boxes)
560 British Isles
562 North America
564 India
565 Australia.
All bought from what I think you folks call a thrift store (a charity shop in British English!) I bought one only a couple of weeks ago which prompted me to do a search on the Internet!
I would be interested to hear from anyone who collects or buys Jig-Maps.
Thanks,
"Alix-the-Charity-Shopper"

from "KL"-12 August 2002:
Hi Jim
Believe it or not, I cannot resist picking up these little puzzles when I see them in the charity shops. I may be mean, but I seldom pay more than about 50p for them, but they are a great buy for the future. There are, of course, a number of collectors who specialize in maps. They are only worth anything if complete and that of course is the gamble when buying from such a source and why I keep my buying price so low.

from "KL"-13 August 2002:
Hi Jim
After my instant reply to this one, I have taken a more careful look at those I have, they are made by Waddington's, and there are at least 3 series.:
The first I have is in a more rigid box than later versions and has the wording : Design No 421 The British Isles.
The second version is a flimsier box with the box ends folded over and the side ends tucked in to form the box lid shape. As on the first box type the map is shown on the right hand side of the lid and the wording "Waddington's shaped JIG-MAP with place name quiz" is on the left side on a white background.the title wording on the box end for those I have are:
SCANDINAVIA STOCK NO 558
BRITISH ISLES STOCK NO 560
NORTH AMERICA STOCK NO 562
Then the third version has a box construction similar to the second version but the map on the lid covers most of the area with "Waddington's Shaped JIG MAP " on a jigsaw shaped panel on the bottom left corner. The title wording on the box end is:
North America Ref # 559
It carries a HOUSE OF GAMES logo on the right hand side. This box also has Copyright 1979.
The Maps for each series are not the same.
Hope all of this may be of some interest.
Regards
"KL"

Plan-a-Jig

At about the same time WADDINGTON'STM also produced their 'PLAN A JIG'TM puzzles - maps of various cities. There were 8 in all produced between 1969 and 1971. These were in boxes similar to those of the early Jig-Maps. They contained 500 pieces and showed streets, rivers, parks (and underground maps on one or two), as well as depicting places of interest. The cities covered were:

London
Paris
Edinburgh
Dublin
Copenhagen
Munich
Sydney
New York.
Thanks to Barbara Middlestorb for all the information above, on this fascinating series from that wonderful puzzle maker, WADDINGTON'STM .
