ESCAPE FROM FRAMES

Jigsaw puzzles based on maps hold a unique place in the history of jigsaw puzzles. If a "dissected map" was not the first jigsaw puzzle, it must have been introduced shortly thereafter. Linda Hannas, in her "The English Jigsaw Puzzle: 1760 to 1890", cites a "Dissected Map of Europe", dated circa 1766. The following is a brief sampling of the jigsaw puzzles which have been based on maps.
