Springbok Named for an Animal

SPRINGBOK EDITIONSTM was founded in the early 1960's by Katie and Robert Lewin, to produce and market puzzles. At the time they were organizing the company, Mr. Lewin was also very active in the National Wildlife Federation. He was particularly fond of the springbok (an animal native to Africa). They decided to name the new company "Springbok" and to use the animal as the trademark symbol.

Mrs. Katie Lewin was president and chose the puzzle designs. She visited museums and galleries for works of art that would make interesting jigsaw puzzles.

Hallmark purchased the company, "Springbok Editions", in 1967. At that time, Springbok was primarily a jigsaw puzzle company with a small line of craft kits. Hallmark used its knowlege of artwork and lithography reproduction to improve the offering and expand it to its present position in the market place. [Courtesy of Frances Main.]

Robert L. Lewin, co-founder of Springbok Editions, died 12 July 2007. He was 96.
