from KD--7/7/2000: Dear Sir or Madam,
A couple of years ago I purchased some puzzles at a yard sale conducted by residents of a nursing home. While there I purchased a couple of cardboard jigsaw puzzles. I was wondering if you could help me identify them or point me in the right direction.
The puzzles are in cylindrical cardboard boxes similar to Quaker Oats boxes. They have on the label "Tubby Picture Puzzle". The gentleman that I bought them from said that they were from 1939 or there about. The manufacturer listed on the label is Playtime House. They are scenes of a man riding a hay wagon in the field, the other is a scene of what appears to be an old western town backdrop with a man riding a red horse. One of the boxes still has the Woolworths price tag of 25 cents. I took the liberty of putting one of the puzzles together and it was in very good condition considering how cardboard objects would have survived since 1939...any help would be appreciated...if these phots help you discern what they are. I appreciate your help and thank you for your time and effort. Sincerely, "KD"

"KD":
They sound like fun things to find at a yard sale. The main source on American vintage jigsaw puzzles is Anne Williams' book, "Jigsaw Puzzles: Illustrated History and Price Guide". That book does mention Playtime House as producing puzzles in the 1950's for both adults and children. Jim McW
